Wheels North Meets Huell Howser

We were on hand today to meet Huell Howser and be part of a the filming of a story about Winters' restored bicycle/pedestrian bridge (that's Huell in the photo inside Steady Eddy's coffee shop).  Wheels North will arrive in Winters on the evening of July 4, 2009, and we'll start our second day of riding here on July 5.
We were able to give Huell information about the ride, and we hope to hear from him!

Wheels North on "The Bicyclist"!

A big thanks to Elle Poindexter and everyone at The Bicyclist!  They've filmed a video promo featuring Elle, which you can see at the end of Episode 29 (it's about 9:15 in).
We'll be visiting with Elle and The Bicyclist next year in Portland, Oregon ... and maybe ending up as part of their show?

A New Member of Wheels North: Laurie

This past Friday was a great day for us (Eric) -- we married the Girl of Our Dreams, Laurie.  She's already signed on as a support worker for Wheels North, so everyone who takes part can look forward to seeing her smiling face at rest stops from Santa Rosa to Seattle.  Here's a photo of Laurie on our wedding day.

7-4-08: One Year To Go!

Today is the Fourth of July, which means two things:
1) In one week, Wheels North's Eric Norris (me) will be getting married to Laurie,  the Girl of My Dreams, and
2) One year from today, the Wheels North riders will be starting our ride in downtown Santa Rosa!
With one year to go, a lot of work has already been done.  We've already collected almost $2000 in donations for the ride, with more to come from fundraisers already under way.  We have a great core group of riders (and plenty of room for more).  We have a day-by-day itinerary, and have started to lay the groundwork for events along the way.
But there's much more to come, and we invite everyone to continue watching this blog and our web site for updates.
See you in Santa Rosa in One Year!

1909-Style Bike

We recently bought this bike for use around town (it's shown here on our first excursion to the grocery store).  It only occurred to us later that it's very much like the bikes that Vic and Ray rode in 1909, right down to the steel frame and the coaster brake.  Maybe we'll ride something like this in Wheels North?

Most Postcards!

All of the postcards sent back by Ray and Vic are now online.  Go to the Wheels North web site, and look for the postcards link. The first card sent back from Seattle was the one pictured here: the California building at the fair, a logical first place to visit for two California boys.

First Wheels North Jersey

We just picked up a prototype of the Wheels North jersey the riders will be wearing next year.  It features the same artwork as our T-shirts (which can be ordered online at www.wheelsnorth.org) on the back, front, and sleeves.  The ride jerseys (part of the rider package for each rider who signs up for the entire ride) will include sponsor logos.

The 1909 Postcards

We will be using the latest technology to report back from the ride next year: cel phones, digital cameras, computers, etc.  Vic and Ray also used the best technology available to them: pen and paper.  Along the way, Vic sent back postcards, which we are pleased to be able to present for the first time in high-resolution, full-color scans at the Wheels North web site.  We've included clear scans of the backs, so it's now possible to read Vic's original words.
Click here to see the first set of scans.  The full postcard collection will be available soon.
Thank you to Evelyn McDaniel Gibb for loaning us the original postcards so that we can provide these scans.

Big Dawg's "Big Fix Walt"

Readers of this blog will recall that Wheels North rider Walter "Big Dawg" Dawes crashed about 8 hours short of his 24-hour bicycle riding goal.  A broken collarbone and two broken ribs have sidelined him for a while, although we're pleased to report that he is doing much better (spoke with him on Tuesday).
Now, Walter's friends in the Houston bicycle messenger community are organizing an event to help Big Dawg get back on his feet. No firm date yet, but look for something happening around the end of May.
Walter has promised us that he'll be riding and fundraising and on the starting line in Santa Rosa next year.

Billiken!

Readers of "Two Wheels North" know that Vic and Ray carried a Billiken with them in 1909.  Billiken ("The God of Things As They Ought to Be") was the patron of the Alaska Pacific Yukon Exposition, and they had purchased one of the small ceramic figurines from a traveling publicity show.
In keeping with the spirit of the ride, Wheels North will carry a Billiken with us.  We have an authentic, 1909 Billiken, which will ride back to Seattle for a 100-year homecoming.
In addition to Billiken, our own Groovy Boy will be along for the ride, continuing his own world travels.

Green Wheels

Vic and Ray tread lightly upon the land during their epic ride, and so will we.  Wheels North will incorporate a number of practices to reduce the impact of our event on the land, water, and air.  Click here for more information on how we will go "green."

Event in Chehalis

We'll be stopping in Chehalis, WA, at the end of our first day in Washington state. While we're there, we'll stop at the Antique Motorcycle Museum, which includes in its  collection one of the first US-made bicycles. A nice stop for our historic ride!

Dawg's Big Ride Ends Early

Katy, TX -- Walter Dawes' attempt to ride 500 miles in 24 hours ended early when another rider slid down the track and into his bike.  More photos and videos from Walter's big ride will be posted soon.
Walter promises to be healed and ready for Wheels North next year.
